The German brand has teamed up with the German start-up Tyde to create a high-end zero-emissions boat. The newcomer, dubbed the Icon, was apparently created in “strict secrecy” and would be completely revealed during this year’s Cannes International Film Festival.
The crew has only released a few facts and photographs ahead of the ship’s official launch next month, but they offer us a good indication of what sailors may anticipate. The Icon, designed by BMW’s Designworks unit, will have a futuristic appearance and an emission-free motor system. It will be inspired by the electric vehicles in the BMW i lineup and will make use of the marque’s existing green technology.
The Icon will be aimed squarely at the top crust, since the team feels that the luxury sector is critical to the decarbonization of the marine industry. “The luxury market is an important reference point for other yachting segments,” said Tyde cofounder Christoph Ballin in a statement.
“In addition, complex and elaborate solutions can be applied here first, before electric mobility becomes mainstream with large volumes in the coming years.”
The yacht will also be polished to the greatest standards, since the Tyde team has extensive experience designing and manufacturing battery-powered yachts. Ballin previously established Torqeedo and electric water mobility, and cofounder Tobias Hoffritz previously worked with BMW on a variety of technology and innovation projects.
The international premiere of The Icon is set for May 17. BMW and Tyde will show and demonstrate the boat in the Vieux Port throughout the event until May 27.
