Sixty-eight identical twins dressed in matching catwalk finery – two dazzling Lurex gowns with shark-bite cut outs, two tailored silk ensembles embroidered with cherry blossoms, two pinstripe suits with ladylike handbags – was a mic-drop moment of visual drama that brought the house down at the Gucci show during Milan fashion week. Gucci had sent a secret scouting group to Twins Day, a twins conference in Twinsburg, Ohio, to cast the show. The audience, which was separated into two rooms, had no idea they were witnessing twins until the closing seconds, when a screen separating the rooms was lowered and each model clasped hands with a sister who had been walking in tandem with them throughout the presentation.
Seeing identical twins may be like seeing a natural marvel of the planet. Twinning is “so common – but so powerful,” remarked Alessandro Michele, the show’s creative director, following the event. He described twins as “the connecting tissue” in families and society.
Michele dedicated the event to the people he refers to as his “twin mothers.” He grew up with his mother, Eralda, and her twin, his aunt Giuliana, two ladies who he described as “magically duplicated.”
